Attachment Therapy
As an effective adjunct to play
therapy, Carol Corcoran, LCMFT, LMFT utilizes a therapeutic approach focused
on attachment, which serves to create a reconnection
between the parent and child who may have lost that
connection for various reasons. During this process,
I invite the parent into the session to help the child
begin the process of reattaching to the parent using
therapy based on attachment theory. As the bond between
parent and child grows, each becomes more connected
and heard by the other, and many times presenting symptoms
are reduced if not eliminated.
Achieving mastery takes
time. Understanding early experiences in an integrated
way, is a gradual process that can
be better accomplished in "little bits." As
the child learns about themselves, their surroundings,
their capabilities, their limitations, they learn new
skills, learn how to handle anger and frustration,
heal, work through difficult times, and increase their
self-esteem and ability to communicate. It is helpful
to keep in mind that some symptoms will not be alleviated
immediately. Through close collaboration between parents,
child and therapist, we can better understand the difficulties
and work at the child's pace toward healthier behavior
and development.
