I am an ‘out-of-network’ provider, which means if your insurance company offers out-of-network benefits, you should receive some form of reimbursement for the cost of therapy.  Many insurance companies that provide out-of-network benefits cover between 50%-75% of the cost per session.

Please contact your insurance company to find out about your specific coverage. Also, clients can pay out-of-pocket with Paypal or use their Health Savings (HSA) or Flexible Spending (FSA) Account that can be linked to Paypal depending on the HSA company.  Insurance companies are not billed directly as CHC is an out-of-network provider.

If you’d like to see if your insurance will fully reimburse or cover a portion of your sessions, please contact your carrier in order to verify what your plan includes . If they do cover out-of-network services, a superbill with necessary codes will be submitted to you for you to submit to your insurance directly for reimbursement. Here are some helpful questions to ask your insurance company to learn how much they will cover:

  • What is my co-insurance or copay for out-of-network sessions?
  • What is my out-of-network deductible and has it been met?
  • What is my out-of-pocket max and has it been met?
  • How many sessions does my plan cover per year?
  • What is the out-of-network allowed amount per inividual therapy session (CPT code 90834) or couple/family therapy session? (CPT code 90847)

Sessions are typically 90 minutes for couples, and families and can be split when seeing partners individually.  This does include scheduling and fee collection done at the onset of the session.

In order for Emotionally, Focused Therapy to be effective, solid out-come research shows couples and families who meet weekly have the best outcome. In some situations, de-escalate couples can meet every other week. Unfortunately, when sessions are spread too far out, the effectiveness of EFT diminishes.

Once I have your respective phone numbers there will be a 20 minute free phone call with all members present to better understand your situation and in order to place you in the queue.

The next step will be to schedule an actual zoom session for either be a 90 minute conjoin session or two one hour individual sessions for each person. That will be determined at the time of the free 20 minute phone call.

Please see the rates for 90 minute and one hour sessions.
Typical EFT couples therapy is 18 to 22 sessions unless one or more of the following is present. This will slow the therapeutic process down, it necessarily doesn’t render it impossible.

1. Abuse or dependence issues regarding substances.
2. A history of physical aggression or emotional control in the relationship by one or both partners.
3. Affairs or infidelities in the relationship currently or in the past.
4. Traumatic events that occurred during the course of the relationship.
5. Traumatic events that occurred during childhood and adolescence.

This does depend on several factors and is also related to the reasons you sought out therapy to begin with.  Once there is a more clear understanding of what the challenges are, the duration of therapy can be better determined and will be further discussed during the initial assessment.

  1. Zoom: Our sessions will be over HIPAA compliant and secure. Having the app downloaded prior to the session will help maximize our time together. Teams is also an option if there is a problem with Zoom.
  2. Internet: A WiFi internet connection is preferred. If WiFi is unavailable, a 4G or RG cellular connection is an option.
  3. Headphones: Headphones are not required but are highly recommended especially if others are nearby. The earphones and can be shared with the partners. This can also cut back on the feedback between your speaker and mic.
  4. A Blue Yeti microphone can really improve sound and reduce feedback and allow the therapist to hear you more closely.  Also, if you are using your phone, a tripod for the phone helps stabilize the camera.
  1. Since we are fortunate to live in a time where technology allows us to meet from just about anywhere, on-line sessions have been found to be more effective from one’s own home.  Previously, there would be wonderful breakthrough moments in my office setting, but couples would fear they couldn’t do this at home.  Now, in the comfort of your own home, you can share breakthrough moments of connection together at home.

Because of the flexibility of on-line therapy, it can work with your schedule without the need for fighting traffic, finding parking etc. and can even reduce your stress in session.

CHC is licensed in Maryland, California, Arizona, Colorado, Virginia and Nevada.

There is potential legislation that could be passed in 2024 which would allow the opportunity for MFTS  to more easily see people from more even states beyond the states listed above.

On January 1, 2022, a ruling went into effect called the “No Surprises Act” which requires health care providers to render a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) for those who are not using insurance nor will seek reimbursement from insurance. The Good Faith Estimate works to show the cost of items and services that are reasonably expected for your health care needs. The estimate is based on information known at the time it is created and is good until January 1 of the following year. The Good Faith Estimate does not include any unknown or unexpected costs that may arise during treatment.

You have the right to receive a GFE document explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act (PHSA), health care providers and health care facilities are required to inform individuals who are not enrolled in a plan or coverage or a Federal health care program, or not seeking to file a claim with their plan or coverage both orally and in writing of their ability upon request, or at the time of scheduling health care items and services to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” of expected charges.

You have the right to receive a GFE for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a GFE before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your GFE, you can dispute the bill.

While it is not possible for a clinicians to know, in advance, how many therapy sessions may be necessary or appropriate for a given person, this form provides an estimate of the cost of services provided. Your total cost of services will depend upon the number of psychotherapy sessions you attend, your individual needs and circumstances, and the type and amount of services that are provided to you. This estimate is not a contract and does not obligate you to obtain any services from the provider listed, nor does it include any services rendered to you that are not identified here.

For questions or more information about your right to a GFE, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
